Give or Dare

What would a MLB pitcher do for the Children’s Cancer Center?

Would you let a child shave your head and tattoo your scalp?

Maybe you would if you knew it would mean a large check for a cause that is near & dear to your heart.

Former MLB pitcher and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Todd Williams is betting that people will be willing to donate at least $5,000.00 to his favorite charity Children’s Cancer Center, and he is using Give or Dare to do this.

According to Todd, using Give or Dare gave him just the excuse he needed to do something big for a cause he is passionate about. He agreed to a dare minimum of $5,000 knowing that amount can do a lot of good for the center, even though he is feeling quite confident that his dare can get help generate at least another zero on that figure.

Give or Dare, one of the 2012 Startup Bus‘s newest startups, launched their first official charity dare on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at the SxSWi Conference, landing their first pledge within minutes – providing some immediate validation for their startup idea.

Gaining actual paying customers is the ultimate goal of any startup.  And given the tight time-crunch and other challenging conditions, these passionate “buspreneurs” focused on actual paying customers instead of simply collecting emails with the hopes of launching.

Isn’t that what Startup Bus should be all about?

What does Bubba the Love Sponge, Charity and a Latex Glove have in Common?

“This won’t hurt a bit”…yeah, right!

Nationally recognized radio personality Bubba the Love Sponge has pulled outrageous stunts on the air for years. Its time to turn the tables on him – the exam room table. Give or Dare, a new Tampa-based startup, is betting that we can get Bubba to agree to a live on-air prostate exam if we can raise a significant amount of money for his favorite charity or maybe the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Would you donate to charity to see Bubba squirm?

With Give or Dare, we are tapping into human psyche behind outrageous stunts and competitive spirit to set the charity fundraising world ablaze!

On Monday, March 6, 20 of Tampa Bay’s most ambitious tech entrepreneurs left from the Tampa Convention Center on a chartered bus for a 3-day roadtrip to the SXSW Interactive Conference in Austin, Texas.  They are competing with 9 other buses who are making similar trips from across the country, such as New York, Boston and San Francisio. By the time these “buspreneurs” arrive in Austin, they will have formed several new startup companies and will be pitching to a live audience with expert judges for the hope of finding investment.

By the time we reach SXSW, Give or Dare will have launched, and we want to fill it with several of the most outrageous daring celebrity challenges for some great causes.

Now, we need your help….

Tell us which celebrity dares you want to see by Tweeting us now!

  • Bubba in the exam room? (Or getting his “private parts” shot by a paintball gun)?
  • Shorty Rossi of Pit Boss in a cage of Pitbull rescue dogs? (Or eating a can of dogfood?)

Give or Dare set to shake up charity fundraising

You need help raising money for your favorite cause, but you know your friends have already given to 30 other ‘a-thons’ just this month. How can you stand out from the rest and get them to contribute?

Be DARING.

It’s time to challenge supporters. With Give or Dare, you can challenge your friends to complete a wild and crazy task, and crowdfund support to see it happen. Would you shave your head if you could raise $100 for your favorite charity? How about $1,000,000? It’s time to give…or DARE.

With more than 1.1 million charities and charitable foundations in the US alone, the fundraising market is crowded and supporters are weary from “donor fatigue.”  Not only are traditional fundraising strategies losing effectiveness, but charities must struggle to do more with less.  With staff reductions and other consequences of reductions in charitable giving, it makes it difficult for any charity to discover and implement new, effective fundraising initiatives.

By the time we get to SXSW, we will be sure to set the charitable giving world ablaze.
